Rum Jumbie Coconut Splash was picked from a “hat” of possible items to review this week. If there is one category of rums we’ve had to good chance to explore, it’s the coconut rum category! Rum Jumbie Coconut Splash comes to us in “nip” form so we added a bit of water to our brandy snifter and went crazy.
The aroma isn’t too unlike that of suntan lotion, which is very similar to many coconut rum aromas. Upon taking on the first sip, I found an awkward finishing flavor that was tough to ignore. While the product starts smooth and easy drinking with some rich yet mild sweet coconut flavor it ends with almost a “diet like” taste in the finish that’s a bit off-dry. I’m very curious as to know if the base rum is what gives it the very defining dry finish.
For a USD$15 product, I think I’d rather select Cruzan Coconut Rum just because I feel it has a bit more authentic natural coconut while Malibu Coconut Rum tends to be overly sweet. Rum Jumbie Coconut Splash falls somewhere in between the two but I don’t think it would win out against the Malibu Black Coconut Rum as that one brings less sweet but more mid-body flavor.
