Kalembu Mamajuana Review

Mamajuana, a product out of the Dominican is well known on the island but what do we here in the United States know of it? Well, having been there and brought back the herbs and spices required to infuse mamajuana, we took the time to compare that “recipe” against the bottled “spiced rum” product following the same concept: Kalembu Mamajuana.

The idea behind this is simple to explain but hard to do: bottle the heritage of the Dominican for others to try. The largest challenge is doing so without stuffing the bottle with the herbs and spices used to create the traditional rum product. The herbs and spices take almost all of the bottle so your home made mamajuana creation is actually created with very little liquid (unless you get a huge bottle. Kalembu created a bottle of rum in the traditional mamajuana fashion without stuffing the bottle with the required product to infuse the rum.

The Kalembu product brings a golden color that looks, acts and tastes much in the liking of a Drambuie by comparison. However, instead of a Scotch base it’s a rum base but brings the honey and spices along for the ride. It does continue to maintain a unique flavor profile that may be fun for some (myself) but a turn off for others (e.g. my wife). I found Kalembu to be more on the sweeter side with much less in the way of a “red wine” profile that you get from the mamajuana on the island, which seems to be more balanced towards a low cost red table wine infused with honey than a spiced rum.

There is plenty of room for interpretation of the mamajuana recipe because, frankly, I’ve yet to find a true single recipe that defines the island-based product. For the price, at or around USD $14.99, it’s not a huge risk on taste so I encourage you to give it a try and let us know what you think.
