Grenadine Tasting Review: Stirrings & Fee Brothers American Beauty

So, in my question to find an alternative to Fee Brothers American Beauty Grenadine I came upon another product of equal quality with a slightly different take on grenadine: stirrings. The Stirrings brand has released a grenadine they’re calling Stirrings Authentic Grenadine and it comes with a slightly different texture, flavor and color. That doesn’t make it worse or better, that makes it different.

I believe character is usually defined by differences. One person is different from another based on all the attributes of their character and grenadine is much the same in my mind. I’ve been promoting and pushing Fee Brothers for a long time and will continue to lead people down the road of American Beauty for all of its attributes and “differences” but Stirrings brings a new dynamic to the playing field. The Stirrings brand is called “Authentic” because it is exactly what it says it is: authentic to the tradition of true grenadine.

As I recently talked about in an article on stirrings authentic grenadine, the value behind the brand is in its simplicity of ingredients. Stirrings brings cane sugar, water and pomegranate as its main ingredients and those ingredients play on the palate within your cocktails and mocktails (Shirley Temple is my defining cocktail testcase). When you bring ginger ale together with Stirrings Authentic Grenadine you get a ginger ale spice and flavor along with a sweet pomegranate profile. When you do this same thing against a Rose’s brand you get a sickly sweet cherry syrup like impact on the beverage…no pomegranate found.

You’ll see Stirrings is more pale in color, omitting the Red #40 from their ingredient list, and provides a more liquid (less syrup thick) product which does its job well. The only question is, will it layer in a cocktail like the other brands and how will it impact the well-known Alien Brain Hemorrhage shooter. Time will tell, that’s our next experiment!

Thanks for the descriptive, head-to-head review. You’re right that the Fee Bros is a convenient, no-refrigerated-needed option.
