Cockspur VSOR 12 Barbados Rum Review

Today we review Cockspur VSOR 12 Barbados Rum mainly because it was used in a cocktail creation and the rum was so distinct and stood out of the cocktail that it had to be tried alone.

This little fantastic number came to us from the Cockspur folks and we were surprised at how tasty this rum is both in a cocktail and by itself. This “Very Special Old Reserve” blend shouldn’t be confused with a 12-year old scotch or 12-year old whiskey, because age on the Islands is much different–things age faster.

This isn’t to say there is a fundamental time vortex on the Island, but the humidity and environment of the islands creates an excellent aged product in half the time. Apparently beaches and blue waters isn’t the only thing the islands give us for a gift.

The nose is an intense butterscotch sweetness, on the palate there is an interesting burn that goes away quickly, leaving a vanilla, butterscotch and oak with a nice weighty body. Like a good rum, it does bring a bit of sweetness (no doubt from some sugar), you’re left with a fun spirit that has a bit of a bourbon ancestor in its resting period. A fine sipping Barbados rum, a fine addition to those tiki cocktails calling for a Barbados rum and a fine addition to our rum cabinet.

Derrick can highly suggest this rum for your collection.
