Captain Morgan Limited Edition, Sherry Oak Finish, Review

Captain Morgan Limited Edition Sherry Oak Finish, released summer 2013, has a beautiful label along with the subtitle “limited edition” but nobody wants to answer the question, “how limited?” Okay, so with that, we go into this knowing that Captain Morgan Original is one of my least favorite spiced rums because I find it a weak offering compared to the rest of the spiced rum offerings on the planet.

However, Captain Morgan does offer other alternatives to their “original” that are far better (Captain Morgan Black and Private Stock being two of them and Tattoo not). So, it’s give or take on how this product will turn out, right?

Comparing the color to the original, you’ll find a deeper amber color to Captain Morgan Limited Edition, which no doubt comes from the Sherry Oak Finish or, perhaps, caramel color of some type to reduce costs (I’m going to take the high road and assume it’s the oak conditioning). At only $1 more than the original Captain Morgan I do wonder where they’re reducing costs because, in the end, the aroma and taste are much more distinctive with the “Limited Edition” product line.

You’ll find sweet caramel, muted spices and a beautiful oak on the aroma. The flavor brings some additional caramel, allspice with a sweeter tone, a fuller bodied product that also drives a good oak through the flavor profile. After a few additional nosings, I did find a bit more of a dark cherry rising out of the glass which is lovely considering the product isn’t a one-trick pony.

Captain Morgan Limited Edition Sherry Oak Finish didn’t walk into this with one flavor in mind. They didn’t say “let’s do vanilla” or “let’s add cinnamon” or “holiday spice” or “summer time cheer” they brought a level of complexity to a lower cost product. Sure, you’ll not find dozens of nuanced flavors but you find more than a handful in a product that is suggested to retail for USD $19.99 (we got it for about $17.99).

Overall, this is a well-worth purchase for those looking to expand along the lower cost spiced rum products. For those that found Captain Morgan Original too weak, thin and watery with little spice will be happy knowing the folks over at CM do know their spices for their prices.

My first 2 bottles were perfect. The third froze into a slush when I put it in the freezer. Makes me wonder about the true alcohol content and quality control. I’ll pass on these in the future.
