Kirk and Sweeney 12 Year Dominican Style Rum Review / Tasting

Today we’re reviewing Kirk and Sweeney 12 Year Dominican Style rum. This is a 80 Proof / 40ABV rum aged for 12 years.

If there is one thing to know about 12 year old rum, that’s a long time for an island rum. The results become quite apparently, this Dominican Rum could pass as a whiskey for those with new whiskey tasting experiences.

At the end of the day, you’ll still get the rum flavor but the sheer amount of wood coming off the back end of the sip is pretty strong. While not that of a young oak aged product, the wood is deeper, richer and maybe a bit charred. You’ll get lots of vanilla notes along with aged wood flavor and all of that hides any chance of a funky rum profile.

If you like aged product this is a good one for you to try, and it works well in cocktails. As a sipper, those with more bourbon style tastes will probably enjoy sipping a rum that can pass as a bourbon.

Kirk & Sweeney is probably around mid-$35 range, you can get a lot of rum in that price category so give it a try and compare to others of similar prices and see what rum flavors you enjoy most.
