What is overproof rum? Why do you use it and what should you be buying? There are a few great overproofs out there and some have a purpose.
Lemonhart 151 is great for tikis, Plantation O.F.T.D is also a great overproof (not as high) that has a dark rich flavor that’s actually fantastic and makes your cocktails better, not just more potent.
Hamilton 151 and LemonHart are demerara rums, but we’ve found Hamilton doesn’t replace Lemonhart 151 when used in tiki cocktails that call for it.
Don Q 151 is a great substitution for anything calling for 151. You can try Stroh 160 but it’s going to add flavorful butterscotch which may not be what all cocktails need. Since Bacardi killed off their overproof, Don Q is the one you’ll need to go with for basic overproof rum needs.
