Tasting Notes: Light sweetness that brings the strawberry flavor without the additional sugary sweetness often attributed with a strawberry daiquiri. Alcohol potency will vary depending on measures used, but some should come through in the finish.

May 10, 2012 at 8:22 amI once had a black russian with water in it.. the ice behind the bar was almost diluted so the bartender took a large scoop of water and a few ice cubes to make my drink… Here’s my question : what would you say if you’re at a bar and you order a margarita, a pina colada or whatever and you get a funkin mix ?

May 10, 2012 at 10:20 amPina Coladas, at least those I’ve ever seen, are blended and I can see them using a mixer to do that without an issue. If it where me, I’d recognize the brand and know what I was getting, if I were someone else, I’d hope they’d ask the bartender what it was that they were using and the bartender would bring the box of mixer over and show them the product and explain some of the tasting properties of it.
Because I can usually recognize the bad mixes (those $1 bottles you get at the store) I would question if I saw those brands. But, the new brands arriving (I also put Perfect Puree into this category) are more high end mixers and if the customer doesn’t know that they should be told this for future knowledge (and to seek them out themselves).
My margarita is slightly different, I’m a bit of a margarita snob 🙂 I rarely find someone that can make a good one and, if I know their inept or haven’t made anything thus far that was impressive, I’d pray to god they had a mixer like this to make something consistent that’s not awful 🙂 But, ultimately, I’d want a bartender that can crank out a simple margarita sans mixer.

May 11, 2012 at 2:56 pmYou’re right, a good mixer is better than an awful handmade drink 🙂 But when I order a cocktail at a bar, I expect a real drink, made with good stuff. Cocktails may be way more expensive than beer, its like when you go to an expensive restaurant, you’ll get mad if you get frozen food. And as you said in another episode, home made sour mix makes the difference 🙂

May 14, 2012 at 5:12 pmI have to say the worst presentation I’ve seen is those typical girly drinks…I don’t drink them but I have had to buy drinks like those for friends of the female persuasion from time to time. :p It drives me crazy to see them use those cheap girly mixers in the cherry vodka sour type drinks though. And what’s even worse is they look bad and taste bad which just makes me feel sad for the people who have to drink them.
