Upon first inspection most people are going to say, “woah, this tastes like spiced rum” and I don’t think you’re in the wrong. The sweet spices of this rye remind my palate of a flavorful spiced rum. My first, second and third impression is that of bright and sweet vanilla with oak. The bottle reads something about dried fruits with muted vanilla flavors and I’ve got to contend with that a bit… it’s more of a sweet vanilla and cake with muted hints of whisky.
The bottle will cost you roughly USD $20 and is well worth the experience of a crazy spiced whisky profile. I think you’d have a better chance being tricked into thinking you’ve got a spiced rum cocktail more than if you were to use the Oakheart Spiced rum brand! I say take a chance on Spicebox and you’ll probably enjoy the experiences, especially on ice while relaxing. It’s the right price, meets the desires of 80% of the audience and, if anyone is to hesitate I’d believe it’s the die-hard whisky fans. This isn’t a normal whisky nor should it be considered as such, this is a flavorfully sweeter vanilla forward spiced whisky.

May 6, 2012 at 7:35 pmGreat job Derrick! Love the review! I happen to know a little about Spicebox… The flavors are all natural and derived by “Cold Extraction”. The best thing about this process it is that the “nose” and the “palate” are basically identical which cannot be achieved with artificial flavors. I always get a huge burst of Nutmeg and a little Cinnamon in Spicebox too… For recipes, some great flavor combinations are Ginger, Orange (Creamsicle), Apple, and of course… Cola.
Cheers to you!
