The manhattan is a very classic traditional cocktail with a deep history dating to the 1800s. It’s well documented, however, the lack of specificity in the ingredients makes it open to interpretation. Even the measures are way different than they are in todays world.

However, what is true is that the industry believes the manhattan is a 3 product recipe with a garnish.

Manhattan
* 2 oz Rye | Bourbon Whiskey
* 1 oz Sweet Vermouth (Antica vs. Martini Rossi)
* 2 dashes of angostura bitters
* lemon or cherry garnish

There is definitely a difference between a rye whiskey and bourbon whiskey, and the vermouth is going to make a solid difference as well. The garnish just puts it over the edge in terms of perceived “sweetness”

Tasting gets interesting as we bring in a newer drinker to give an older drink that’s spirit-forward, a taste.
