Our rum runner tries to be more traditional to the 1950’s version which still turns out to be a dangerous little number. Probably something more dangerous than the traditional tiki cocktail known as the Zombie.
The Rum Runner cocktail recipe falls into your tiki category of drinks: it brings potent rum, it takes it to another level, and has the color and dangerous look an appeal. The fruit works hard to hide the rum in the rum runner, but it’s far too full of spirit to hide completely.
The use of banana against the raspberry/blackberry flavor profile gives the rum runner more interesting flavor profiles than a standard rum cocktail. The pineapple gives you the awesome foamy head and the grenadine…well, who knows, maybe to balance out the alcohol?
The Rum Runner
– 1 oz pineapple juice
– 1 oz orange juice
– 1 oz blackberry liqueur
– 1 oz banana liqueur
– 1 oz light rum
– 1 oz dark rum or aged rum
– Splash grenadine
– Orange Slice Garnish
Given that recipe it’s not surprising the rum runner fits both the tiki cocktail, the potent cocktails and is probably best to make at home. The rum runner at home gives you the safety to have a couple cocktails without worry about travel time. Yet, you’ll find the rum runner fits appropriately at many bars. If you’re a bartender, the rum runner should be in your bartending 101 little black book.
Bartending 101 suggests you learn to make some variation of this cocktail so that you’re prepared for the first customer request when the summer time rolls around and summer cocktails are in full swing. Especially so if you work at a tiki bar, every bartender is going to be ask to make a rum runner. You can either make up your rum runner recipe on the fly, or work off this bartender delight!
