This tiki design is from around 1962 sourced from the Pieces of Eight restaurant in Marina del Rey, California. The restaurant closed in the 1970s.
Pieces of Eight
1.5 oz Passion Fruit Syrup
1.5 oz. Light Rum
¾ oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
¾ oz. Fresh Lime Juice
So what the heck is a piece of eight? The real Piece of Eight is a spanish silver coin, about 38 mm in diameter worth eight Spanish reales and minted in the Spanish empire after 1598. The divisibility into 8 reales is where it got the nickname “pieces of eight.”
How do you tie Spanish currency to a restaurant name? Pieces of Eight were often brought to American through West Indies trade. They were a standardized Currency in the Americas and elsewhere, especially with a shortage in British currency at the time (lack of precious metals.)
