How To Make The Original Tequila Sunrise / Classic & Historic Cocktail

Today we’re going to show you how to make the original tequila sunrise. This cocktail was made in the 30’s and does not contain orange juice or sweet grenadine. This is the original classic drink with a big focus on cassis / black current.

Created by Gene Sulit, a popular bartender at The Arizona Biltmore in the late 30’s and early 40’s. The bartender was asked by a patron to make something that would be great for sipping near the pool, and he came up with and named this the tequila sunrise.

The tequila sunrise was known to be this recipe by those that knew it for roughly 30 years until, it is said, a private party at the Trident in San Francisco had a couple young bartenders re-invent it and serve it to Mick Jagger in 1972. He loved it and carried the request to make this _new_ grenadine and orange juice mixture on his tour, which he then dubbed “Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise Tour”.

And that was the end of the original classic. But wait, then to bury the recipe even further, Jose Cuervo starts marketing their shitty ass especial into the US in 1973 and put this recipe on the back of the bottles. Then, later that year the Eagles record a song by the name of Tequila Sunrise for their Desperado album and boom, the world wanted one.

The Original Tequila Sunrise
1.5 oz (45ml) Tequila
