No holiday is complete without a pat of butter. What exactly is a pat of butter anyway? So confusing… however, we’ve got butter with rum and a bunch of other holiday spices to kick up the season into awesome. While, in the end, this cocktail is a bit of a project to build, it does bring spiced flavor for fans of hot and buttery cocktails.
The warmth of this cocktail doesn’t bring out too much alcohol potency, perhaps the brown sugar rounds out the alcohol while the other spices are giving you something else to think about (aside from the spices floating around in the water). The dark rum doesn’t impact the cocktail as much as it does in a cocktail with less spices. The butter definitely leaves a thing slippery coating on your mouth and lips.
Recipe: You can stir with a cinnamon stick to add a bit more seasonal freshness along with a neat themed stirring method.

December 13, 2011 at 4:48 pmYou have to try Wilda’s hot buttered rum recipe – I will have to dig it up, but you make the base, which I think is vanilla ice cream, butter, sugar and spices, and keep it in the freezer – then you just add your rum and boiling water when you make it. Have you never had it, she used to make it at Christmas. And you need whole nutmeg and a microplane! We love your show – when the boys hear it, they come running to the computer to watch with me. Cheers! Lorie

December 13, 2011 at 5:23 pmNo, I don’t think I’ve had it, I guess I may not recall but the only thing I remember is the eggnog and brandy. We may not have been “of age” when it was available (or I may not have been there). Vanilla Ice cream would be a good component, love ice cream!

December 13, 2011 at 5:41 pmShe used rum extract when we weren’t “of age”, so we could all partake! I will get the recipe and email it to you!

December 19, 2011 at 7:25 pmIn my experience, you really need to add boiling water to the mix and then just a bit of butter on top of the boiling water. It will melt quickly. The HBR is excellent when you come in from the NH cold!
