Broken Shed Vodka, our review of the New Zealand based vodka brand which uses milk whey as the distillate. My first inspection was specifically the aroma, which smells much like a typical vodka: a bold ethanol scent with a hint of sweetness. Broken Shed Vodka brings a refreshing taste to a vodka, perhaps it was their unique distillate or the water they use, I’m not 100% sure, but it’s definitely distinct with a muted sweetness that reminds me of a very muted molasses or brown sugar like flavor. The attack is extremely light and smooth which almost feels like a smooth water without any hint of an alcohol bite. The finish is fine, crisp and fast. No alcohol flavor with a shochu like smoothness all in a four-time distilled vodka running at 40 ABV (compared to the shochu comparison which is about 22% ABV).
This product brings a refreshing look into a vodka along with its own unique flavor and heritage. For a suggested price of USD $32-35, you’ll have a hard time finding something equivalently tasting at this price point. I would take Broken Shed Vodka over products that are double the price and nothing but hype and bottle design (yeah, I’m thinking Crystal Head Vodka right now).
The real test will be how much it hides in a cocktail. I’m afraid some of the unique flavor may be lost in a cocktail with too many ingredients. Perhaps Broken Shed is best served on ice?
