Today we’re tasting Willett Family Estate’s 4 year Straight Rye Whiskey “rare release”, it’s a 105.8 proof (or so) rye whiskey. Ian’s parents brought it back when they were on some travels in the country last year and told us to try it.
This Straight Rye Whiskey has a bit of herbal “cold” peppermint like impact on the tongue that’s strong but not too burny on the tongue. It has a bit of a woody aftertaste that comes, no doubt, from the fresh white oak barrels. You will need a few sips to truly get the flavors but beware, she’s a strong little sipper.
Willett Family Estate’s 4 year Straight Rye Whiskey definitely has some herbal notes, perhaps coriander or eucalyptus, perhaps from how the rye is prepared or germinated (or grown). The potency could be great to help cut through a whiskey sour or to present itself in a manhattan cocktail.

Willett Family Estate’s 4 year Straight Rye Whiskey is purchasable, it’s probably going to run you somewhere between $50 and $60, but it was out of stock in a few places. If you can find it, and you’re into rye whiskey this may work well over ice or in a rye-based cocktail recipe.
