Should I use cocktail bitters in my whiskey sour? And, if so, which ones would they be? There are a good selection of brown spirit bitters to choose from, how do you know what fits the brown spirit? Usually those bitters tend to be more herbal forward, citrus but not too much flowery notes (like lavender and such, as those work well with clear spirits like gin).
The Whiskey Sour
– 2 oz bourbon
– .75 oz lemon juice
– .75 oz simple syrup
– .5 egg white
– 1 dash salt
– 3 dashes bitters

A standard whiskey sour recipe is fun, but when you’ve had a lot of them you start to look for variations to add a twist. The most consistent way to alter your standard whiskey sour (or boston sour) is to add a few dashes of cocktail bitters.
We use root beer bitters to add an interesting twist to the cocktail, because it has just the right balance of herbs without being sweet like a root beer beverage, but you will find some sarsaparilla backend flavor.
We also tend to favor chocolate bitters because of the nuance of dark chocolate / cacao added to the flavor profile.
