Golden Ratio: 2:1:1 Cocktail Balance | 3 Minute Cocktail Education

What is the golden ratio? It’s 2:1:1 — what to does it mean? It means cocktail balance! How do you make our favorite margarita? https://bit.ly/3gfxRnk

We use our Professional Boston Shaker to build out a quick 2:1:1 Margarita. Want a professional boston shaker? Of course you do: https://awesomedrinks.com/products/professional-boston-shaker-kit/

Margarita Recipe
2 oz Tequila
1 oz Agave Nectar
1 oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

Using the concept of this golden ratio we can create a whole host of great cocktails, some you may have even heard of, including things like: Daiquiri, Gimlet, Whiskey Sour, Mojito, South Side, French 75…what? All 2:1:1 ingredient ratios!

The ratio is simple, your mixing your core spirit as 2-parts, and then 1 part is sour and 1 part is sweet. Done! In ounce increments, that makes each cocktail require 2 oz of spirit.

However, you can also reduce the ratio by dividing it in half. 2:1:1 becomes 1:1/2:1/2 by just dividing it all down, and now you can make the exact same balanced drink with less volume. Need a bigger drink? 4:2:2!

So, given what we’re seeing, why is our margarita too sweet to the taste? Because Agave Nectar is not equal to simple syrup. Agave nectar is 1.5x sweeter than sugar, so 1 oz of agave isn’t the same as 1 oz of simple. Maple syrup is 3x sweeter, so you have to be even more careful.
