Blind Rum Tasting: Ron Zacapa 23 Solera, Ron Abuelo Anejo, and Flor de Cana Reserve 7

Today we are running a blind rum tasting using some rums south of the United States including: Ron Zacapa 23 Solera, Ron Abuelo Añejo, Flor de Caña Reserve 7. These rums are from Guatemala, Panama, and Nicaragua respectively.

This blind tasting isn’t a true competitive battle because the rum selection is literally “what we have on hand” in the specific regions. This is more an educational flavor tasting to see what products we prefer over the others. Given our Ron Abuelo Panamanian rum is the entry level product by the brand it cannot be directly compared against an older rum like Flor de Caña because Ron Abeulo Añejo is a 2-3 year old rum vs. the Flor de Caña 7 year old.

You’ll find Ron Zacapa 23 is a solera blended product which contains many ages, the oldest of which is 23 years old, but a solera blend contains many different ages most of which is probably not very much 23 years old.

A few educational tidbits: we selected three rum brands that are all technically aged all from a similar region of the world. We also selected three rums none of us are particularly familiar with so it is more difficult to relate to other products.

You’ll also find that out of these we do know Ron Zacapa 23 has a good deal of sugar included, roughly 42g of sugar per liter. We are not sure about the other two, but that does help give a key indicator on “deliciousness” vs others.
