Kraken and Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum Tasting Review

Tasting Notes: The Kraken’s Blood, a shooter that brings a strong jagermeister flavor. The red bull isn’t a serious big deal in the flavor, but the medicinal profile comes on strong as well.

Kraken Spiced Rum, a flavorful smooth dark rum and spices which comes together in a complete package. At a good price, Kraken Spiced Rum rivals many spiced rums in the market because it has a good price point, a pretty bottle and a solid marketing campaign. The marketing is backed up with flavor, which is the most important point–word of mouth is king and Kraken has many fans.

Enter, Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum, a product which seems to us to be their new flagship product because Black is where it’s at; compared to original Captain Morgan, the Black variant brings an additional flavorful body of spices with a bit more of a hot back-end alcoholic bite which shows you’re getting your moneys worth. Unlike the original, Captain Morgan Black brings much more intense spice flavor that comes through in a spiced rum and coke so much better than its original more subtle variant.

Both products are roughly the same price point but bring something slightly different to the table. Kraken stands alone in a glass very well with a bit of water or a cube of ice, where Captain Morgan Black brings a great spiced rum to a cocktail by cutting through much of the other cocktail flavors. While Kraken will undoubtably work great in a cocktail, Black has a bit more of a razors edge for getting through a more intensely flavored creation.

I’m a little surprised you guys didn’t mention the molasses flavor in both, although I do get it more from the Kraken than the Captain’s

the problem is, if you don’t typically sit down and taste molasses, it’s hard to pick it up in a flavor. For instance, I could hunt for it and say “that’s gotta be the molasses” but until you’ve added it to your tasting dictionary (i.e. tasted molasses) the best you can do is guess.

I appreciate the review. You gave a valuable description and based on your insight I’ll certainly try the Kraken. The comments about the “lash” are misplaced. The reference is to punishment for infractions at sea by sailors and nothing to do with slavery or racism. Interestingly, when being berated about the value of the British Navy, Winston Churchill allegedly said, “Don’t tell me about the Navy, it’s all Rum, sodomy, and the lash.” .Thanks again, great review.
