Cabo Wabo A Tequila With Style

Cabo Wabo A Tequila With StyleNormally a drink fronted by a star like Sammy Hagar is born to suck. What other reason would a figurehead be put in charge of the label if it wasn’t to promote a mediocre product when great products stand alone without the help of hype?

In this case, however, Sammy Hagar went out of his way to find a Tequila that was worthy of his own needs: a restaurant. Cabo Wabo is a nightclub and restaurant in Cabo San Lucas and requires a Tequila to fit the theme, Cabo Wabo Tequila was brought there to shine.

The Tequila was so good that it is now sold world-wide and can be enjoyed by everyone outside of Mexico and across the oceans in Europe. The bottle is stylish, the contents are warm and smooth and the entire experience is worth every penny (yes, it’s not so cheap).

Sammy Hagar, a rock ‘n’ roll legend and Mill Valley Tequila entrepreneur, is selling an 80 percent interest in his Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari, the world’s seventh-largest spirits company, for $80 million, the two sides said Monday.

Hagar created Cabo Wabo Tequila to serve patrons at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He began to distribute it in 1999. Last year, his company sold 147,000 cases, making it the second-best-selling premium Tequila in the United States, he said in a telephone interview. (sfgate.com)

How can you possible pass up a Tequila with that much press and popularity? It is a must try drink as long as you can get past the idea of buying into the Sammy Hagar name (it made me feel dirty, but I got it as a gift). Normally, I try to buy the brand that’s been rated “the best” regardless of name (one reason I try to avoid Absolut Vodka) because, in some cases, market hype can be much better than the contents itself.

I’ve tried Cabo Wabo Reposado and it’s tasty and smooth, I’m sure all their varieties are just as good.
