Vice Rei’s Anis Escarchado – Sugar Rush in a Bottle

Anis Escarchado is a Portuguese after dinner anise-based liqueur that many folks in the Azores make at home DIY style. We’ve just got a normal bottle, produced by Vice Rei.

If you like super ultra sweet after dinner sippers, Anis Escarchado is probably in your cabinet already. This is the Portuguese answer to Sambuca and, from what I’ve been told, is homemade all over the Azores (very few probably buy a production version of this) but here in the US, this product isn’t so popular so you have to find it at specialty stores.

If you’ve had sambuca, or perhaps even Absinthe, then you’re on the right track for the overall flavor profile. However, where absinthe is high proof and low on sweet (often a sugar cube is added), Anis Escarchado is a sugar rush in a bottle, so much sugar it comes out thick like maple syrup and has sugar crystals making up a good portion of the bottle.
