Maestro Dobel Tequila Review

A clear reposado…what? Yeah, Maestro Dobel Tequila mimics some of what we’ve seen often in a white rum, filtering down the colors to clear but not something we usually see in an aged tequila. While Reposado doesn’t typically represent the most aged of tequilas, it does tend to bring a bit of age and a bit of color so my initial thought (thinking marketing) is that Maestro Dobel is going to instinctively be brought up against a silver tequila in some taste comparisons.

Why? Because it did with us! In truth, not looking close enough the “silver reposado” thing never really came into the conversation and I don’t read close enough. So, what we did was taste Maestro Dobel and came to the conclusion that it does have a nice mild aroma that hints at a bit of sweet citrus, muted pepper and the typical “agave” like nose (which reminds me of an over-ripened pineapple skin.)

Upon first taste, Maestro Dobel appears extremely approachable as its flavors move from muted to a nice moderately bright agave. Some folks that aren’t big into tequila may find that the turn-off starts with the initial taste and becomes a bit easier as you let it sit in your mouth. However, Maestro Dobel does bring a very well rounded flavorful experience that comes on light and finishes with a tasty intensity. The finish, has a bit of a “rice wine” or “saké” like flavor profile–not extreme amounts as I’m fairly sensitive to those flavors, but definitely a bit of a uniqueness in a saké like way; perhaps this has to do with the aging or something, we’re not sure. Definitely different.

The only thing I’d fear is that, in a blind tasting, it may come up short due to the rather mild starting flavor. At a suggested price of USD $54.99, this would make a higher priced silver but since it’s a hidden reposado tequila, the price range falls right in line with the flavor profile. I would highly suggest tis as a great introductory tequila for those that are ready to get serious about 100% de agave and are giving up on the caramel color crap you see for under $13 at the store.
