How To Make The Last Word / Classic 1950s Cocktail

Today we’re going to show you how to make the last word. This is a fairly old drink with a fairly strange history. First, we don’t know the true nature of the mystical history, but we do know the cocktail was lost in time for a few dozen years.

One rumor says the Detroit Athletic club invented, others say they just served an already invented drink that they had heard of before. But, we will probably never know the true answer unless a historian starts breaking it down.

What we do know is that it was re-discovered in an old recipe book written by Ted Saucier’s called Bottoms Up in 1951. By then, however, the recipe was just a printed set of instructions. It wasn’t until 2005 that the Last Word got another chance at life.

In 2005 a bartender at Zig Zag Cafe in Seattle found it in that book and tossed it on the menu. It became a success. This isn’t the first time old school cocktails have come to light from pre-prohibition era thanks to fantastic bartenders and historians. We’ve seen this occur from Dale Degroff and, no doubt others like Jeff Berry, Morganthaler and others. They find these hidden gems and bring them back into the light.
