Suffering Bastard as designed in Cairo at Shepheard’s by Joe Scialom in 1942. In 1959 he came up with a couple hangover remedies which he called Dying Bastard and Dead Bastard while working at the Marco Polo Club in Manhattan.

We preferred the dying bastard out of the three recipe variations, potentially because it brings all the flavor profiles together without being too overwhelming on alcohol. However, the dying bastard brings the biggest sense of bourbon which is something many tiki restaurants use in their standard suffering bastard.

Bourbon really changes the perspective of this tiki cocktail as most bring molasses/rum flavor as their main objective. The Suffering bastard is okay too, light and refreshing like many gin based drinks. Definitely an interesting tiki drink experience.
