The Dark ‘N Stormy (or Dark and Stormy if you don’t like apostrophe’s) is a drink that combines ginger beer and Goslings Black Seal. The recipe itself isn’t trademarked (as you can’t do that), but you can “lock in” the ingredients of the cocktail recipe, which is why it’s defined as ginger beer and Black Seal.

However, the proportions to the recipe and some of the nuances can be adjusted. The proper Dark and Stormy uses a lime garnish but doesn’t always call for any lime juice within the cocktail recipe.

I personally like a bit of lime bite in my Dark and Stormy but it’s a personal preference. I have had a viewer yell at me once because it wasn’t done with lime juice and it became a biblical battle in which I couldn’t figure out what the big deal was about the recipe.

However, adding some lime juice to the Dark ‘N Stormy doesn’t create a new drink which is important because the trademark will still stand. Just as much as renaming it a Dark “n” Stormy or Dark N’ Stormy won’t change the trademark… if you want to create rum and ginger beer just give it a new name when you have no Black Seal around.

For such a simple drink, the Dark and Stormy has a strange past that involves bartenders and bars getting fines or notices about mis-using the Dark and Stormy name. However, for Goslings, the Dark and Stormy name has helped solidify Black Seal as a rum of choice for this cocktail and other drink options.

If you work at a bar, need some bartending 101 tips, our tip is to keep this drink name with the Dark Rum of choice: Gosling’s Black Seal. First, it tastes the way it should (which was the initial intention of the trademark) and it’s a great tasting rum anyway.

This is a recipe every bartender should know, and should be in every Bartending 101 guide, not just those in Bermuda.
